If you’ve been personally victimized into thinking that one supplement will fix all of your health concerns, you’re not alone. At Infinite Wellness, we often see people who understand that quick fixes to their health issues cannot be solved with a supplement with the hope of immediate results. While supplements can play an important role in restoring balance, they should never be the only approach to healing. We teach our patients that true, long-lasting wellness comes from addressing the foundational aspects of health: hydration, minerals, proper nutrition, quality sleep, and movement. This blog will share critical foundational elements and why a supplement-only approach may leave gaps in your healthy journey.
Hydration: The Body’s Fuel
Water is essential for every body cell, tissue, and organ. It helps regulate temperature, supports digestion, and ensures that nutrients and oxygen are transported efficiently. Many of the body’s systems cannot function effectively without optimal hydration.
Hydration helps to support nutrient absorption. Water helps to break down the food that we eat and the supplements that we take. It is also needed to produce salvia, which begins the breakdown of food and the production of enzymes in our stomachs. Nutrients, vitamins, and minerals must be dissolved into water to be absorbed efficiently by your digestive system. Without enough water, this process is compromised, and your body cannot properly use and receive the benefits of everything you use. Proper hydration also ensures that things are moving smoothly through your digestive tract, preventing constipation and promoting healthy bowel movements, which is essential for detoxification. This is what we will talk about next!
Arguably, one of the most significant roles of water is its involvement in detoxification. The major organs for detoxification are your kidneys, liver, and skin, and they all rely on water to help flush out waste products and toxins—which is great from an overall health perspective. There are a ton of detox supplements online, but without adequate hydration, these detox processes slow down, leading to excess toxin accumulation.
Among all the other things that hydration does for us, it also directly impacts physical energy and mental clarity. Dehydration in mild forms can still lead to fatigue, brain fog, and decreased focus. Water is needed to maintain blood volume to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and brain. If you are dehydrated, your body struggles to maintain optimal blood flow.
This naturally leads to our next topic, minerals and their importance in optimal health and well-being.
Minerals: The Spark Plugs of Life
Now that you know how important hydration is for your health and well-being, let’s discuss minerals or electrolytes, which are also gaining in popularity on social media. The most important minerals to have in adequate amounts are sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. We like to consider minerals as the spark plugs for every interaction in the body. There are a ton of minerals, but those four help support blood regulation, adrenal health, and thyroid health, more specifically. The minerals we consume regulate nerve function, muscle contractions, and the body’s overall fluid balance. The important thing to note is that many of our minerals work best inside our cells, so we need to ensure that when we are hydrating, we are hydrating with minerals to support our body. The goal is never to consume a ton of water without minerals because we lose our vital electrolytes.
Even minerals like zinc and selenium are crucial for everything from energy production to immune function and hormone regulation. Taking a mineral-based approach to nutrition allows you to reduce imbalances in a bio-available capacity. The problem with many supplements geared to one specific health concern is that some can throw off very delicate mineral ratios, causing you to feel worse. Many of these are synthetic versions, which can be stressful on the body, and the liver has to break down these vitamins because the body does not recognize them in a bio-available form. If you have a body that is out of balance, depleted, and overburdened, this can lead you to feel worse.
Nutrition: The Foundation of Nourishment
We understand that time is a luxury, and sometimes, food preparation can be challenging, especially in certain seasons of life; real food is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and macronutrients your body needs to function optimally. So much of the research supports that whole, unprocessed foods provide a complex range of nutrients that work together in ways that supplements cannot replicate. The leafy greens you eat are full of magnesium, fiber, and phytonutrients that a magnesium supplement cannot match.
Optimal ratios of different micronutrients help build protein and the backbones of your hormones and other critical body parts so that you can continue doing all the things you love each day. Does that mean that you need to be perfect every single day? No, but it does mean that trying your best in every situation is encouraged to ensure you replenish your body with all the nutrients it needs each day. At Infinite Wellness, we support our patients by educating them on the choices to help build a strong foundation that supports energy, mood, and digestion in ways supplements can’t. Our approach includes food choices supporting gut health, hormonal balance, and inflammation management.
Sleep: Your Body’s Regulator
Now that much of our world revolves around technology, the stress of everything we have to do is piling up more than ever. Our concept of balance and rest has become flawed in many ways. As a society, we are so quick to grab coffee or caffeine as a tool just to get us through the day that we forget what it feels like to be without these stimulants. The truth is that natural energy is possible without caffeine or other energy-boosting supplements, but it all starts with sleep.
Unfortunately, many people are not getting adequate and quality restorative sleep each night. Many patients who come to see us indicate waking up in the middle of the night, having trouble falling asleep at night, or not feeling energized despite saying they get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. The truth is that productive and efficient sleep is more important than just hitting a sleep hour goal. Sleep is when your body repairs tissues, balances hormones, consolidates memories, and more. Sleep is not often considered an important indicator of our health, but it is. A recent study showed that sleep deprivation indicates early mortality (1). They tested a cohort of over 60,000 people and found that sleep quality is more important than quantity.
When working with our patients at Infinite Wellness, we emphasize improving sleep quality through lifestyle changes, sleep hygiene, and stress reduction techniques before turning to supplementation. Without this stable foundation, your body is in a constant state of catch-up, and no supplement can replace that.
Movement for Circulation and Detoxification
Physical activity is the most talked about in our last foundational habit to support you outside of supplements. We have been led to believe that doing more of a good thing is always good when it can contribute to more harm. Physical activity stimulates circulation, improves lymphatic drainage (our bodies’ built-in waste system), and supports your detox pathways. You also receive the benefits of better-regulated blood sugar and reduced stress, which directly impact and improve your health and well-being.
Our bodies were designed for movement; that is why we were given muscles to help us get from one place to another; we get lungs and hearts to help us breathe and ensure that we can adapt to stressors. We understand how easy it is to be more sedentary in our current life with work that causes us to sit down for 8 hours each day or even drive to get to places we need to be. Because the movement has the benefit of reducing stress and supporting our dopamine levels from a foundational level, using that to help aid in detoxification or stress management is often overlooked in terms of support for the body. Only some workouts must be super intense; even a simple walk is sufficient.
Putting It All Together
The truth is that supplements aren’t the only components of our overall care plan that we provide to our patients because we understand that while they are powerful, they are tools, not something that builds a strong foundation. Building on a rocky foundation doesn’t work; it causes you to fall and feel like you must start over. We believe that supplements should complement a health plan, not replace it. That is why we walked through hydration, mineral status, food choices, sleep, and movement; those pieces help you maintain your health in the long run.
At Infinite Wellness, we believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. Our holistic approach ensures that your body has the tools to heal from the ground up, creating a long-lasting foundation for health. Supplements have their place, but they can never replace how you live your daily life. Are you ready to strengthen your health foundations and work towards optimal health?
