Despite the fact that over 90% of women of childbearing age experience PMS, does not make it NORMAL
What is PMS?
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), is a combination of symptoms that women may start to experience about a week to two weeks before the onset of their period. These symptoms vary from woman to woman and can even change over the course of a woman’s life.
Some symptoms of PMS can include:
• Mood Swings (irritability, sadness)
• Anxiety
• Weight Gain
• Bloating
• Pelvic Cramping
• Period Cravings
• Insomnia
• Acne Flare-Ups
• Constipation or Diarrhea
• Breast Tenderness
Although it is not clearly understood what causes PMS or why some women have more severe symptoms, fluctuating hormone levels are thought to play a role. Over the course of the month, a female’s hormones ebb and flow naturally. But, once you start to add poor dietary choices and lifestyle habits such as smoking, drinking, or prolonged stress we can start to see the development of hormone imbalances, which can increase severity and intensity of PMS symptoms.
For example, bloating is a PMS symptom that many report and for some it can be quite noticeable and even uncomfortable. But, did you know that bloating during periods is likely causes by an imbalance with estrogen and progesterone. When these two hormones are no longer in optimal ranges you can end up experiencing more salt and water being retained, leading to more bloating.
